Produced as part of a long-standing joint venture between PSA Group (Peugeot and Citroën's parent) and Fiat at the Sevelonord plant in northern France, it shares the same basic design as Citroën's Dispatch and Fiat's Scudo. It's due to go on sale in February 2007 and all variants will be available immediately.
Customers can choose from two different HDi diesel engines; a 1.6-litre producing 90 bhp or a 2.0-litre generating either 120 bhp or 136 bhp. Top power kicks in at 4,000rpm in all cases and the beefiest version is equipped with a particulate trap.
The 1.6-litre produces peak torque of 132 lb/ft at 1,750rpm. The 120 bhp offers 221 lb/ft at 2,000rpm, while the 136 bhp provides 236 lb/ft at the same engine speed. Also on offer, but not in the UK, is a 140 bhp 2.0-litre 16-valve petrol lump.
Developed in conjunction with Ford, the 2.0-litre diesel is married to a strengthened version of Peugeot's ML6C six-speed manual gearbox no matter which power option you pick. The 1.6-litre comes with a five-speed box.Cargo space ranges from 5.0m3 if you opt for the short-wheelbase standard roof model rising to 6.0m3 if you pick the long-wheelbase standard roof and 7.0m3 if you choose the long-wheelbase high roof. The most the old Expert could offer was 4.0m3.
It's worth noting that standard roof Experts are low enough to gain entry to many multi-storey car parks.
Gross payload capacity ranges from 1,000kg to 1,200kg, up from the outgoing model's maximum 900kg, and even the short-wheelbase derivatives come with eight cargo tie-down points.
At 562mm, the rear loading height is 23mm less than that of the old model. Cargo deck length ranges from 2,254mm to 2,584mm, but longer items such as copper piping can be carried thanks to the cleverly-designed optional overhead storage tunnel.
It allows them to be slid in at roof height and go through the bulkhead — another option — into the cab but above the occupants at windscreen height, safely inside the tunnel. Objects up to 2,884mm in length can be swallowed.
A sliding door on each side of the load area comes as standard, while rear entry is through twin, side-hinged doors that can be swung through 180° if you release the stays. They can be either glazed or unglazed and reach to roof height even on high roof derivatives. A tailgate is on offer as an option on some models.
An attractively-designed vehicle that looks considerably better than its predecessor and with the Peugeot lion prominently positioned at the front in line with the manufacturer's current family styling, Expert is also marketed as a platform cab.
