Renault Master MWB MM35dci 120 M/Roof Air Con+ Pack Panel Van in Silver

Thanks to a major upgrade to the Master towards the end of 2003, Renault currently has one of the most up-to-date van ranges in the UK.

The front-end has been brought more in line with the family look first seen on Trafic, but the major changes lie beneath the metal. For a start anti-lock brakes are standard across the range, the gearlever has been moved to the facia and there's a choice of four common rail turbodiesel engines.

An 82 bhp 1.9-litre is carried over from the previous range, as has the 115 bhp 2.5-litre, which has been joined by a 100 bhp
version. Top of the range is a new 3.0-litre, courtesy of Nissan, which is capable of 136 bhp and 236 lb/ft of peak torque.

The two most powerful engines drive the front wheels via a six-speed 'box; the other two use a five-speeder.

This a a cracking range of engines and even the 1.9-litre doesn't feel too underpowered. The 3-litre is excellent.

There is a choice of three wheelbases and roof heights which results in load areas ranging from 8.0m
3 to 13.9m3 while payloads start at 1,043kg and go up to 1,691kg. Gross vehicle weights of 2.8t, 3.3t and 3.5t are available. The rear loading height is very respectable at a maximum of 545mm.

Rear doors that can be swung through 270° and latched against the van's sides using magnetic catches are an option. A sliding nearside door comes as standard, with an offside slider on offer at additional charge.

The all-new cab is more comfortable and better designed than that of the predecessors, and moving the gearstick to the dash makes life much easier.

One thing is guaranteed. You won't go short of storage space. You'll find a slot smack in the middle of the dashboard that's big enough to swallow an A4 clipboard and prevent it from creating those irritating reflections in the windscreen.

Cast your eyes downwards and you'll spot an expandable pocket. Look up again and you'll see a clip for paperwork. In addition you get a lidded and lockable glovebox with a shelf just above it.

There are holders for cups or cans at either extremity of the facia and a bin in each of the doors. They can both hold a big bottle of water, and keep it upright, as well as an atlas.
It's much easier for the driver to slide across the cab and emerge safely on the pavement side now that the gearlever has been moved from the floor to the dashboard. Good to see the hazard warning lights switch positioned so prominently next to it.

You can adjust the driver's seat for height, reach and rake, and it's equipped with an inboard armrest too. Protected by an airbag, the occupant enjoys good vision ahead and to either side, and rearwards down the van's flanks too thanks to big, redesigned, exterior mirrors.

Even on the most basic models the standard specification is good. On top of ABS there's a driver's airbag, power steering, remote central locking and a volumetric alarm.

Servicing is required every 18,000 miles for the 1.9 and at 25,000 mile intervals for the rest.
