VW Caravelle Executive 2.5TDi Tiptronic 7 Seat Minibus 

Three diesel engines are currently available: a 103bhp 1.9-litre and two 2.5-litre units developing either 128bhp or 172bhp. The most powerful version copes better with the Caravelle’s hefty kerbweight and offers a more relaxed drive thanks to its impressive 295lb ft of pulling power.

Considering the Caravelle’s size, it handles well. The steering is well weighted and provides decent feedback. There is little roll through corners, helping to keep rear passengers comfortable, but the ride can feel a little firm over rougher roads. Motorway cruising is a smooth and relaxed affair.

At motorway speeds there is very little engine or wind noise, and the most powerful 2.5 diesel in particular gives effortless performance. Both 2.5s are available with a slick six-speed gearbox.

The high list prices may put off private buyers. Running costs should be reasonable on diesel versions, however, thanks to fuel economy averaging in the mid-30s mpg. Variable servicing means a maximum of 18,000 miles or two years between services.
