Nissan Cabstar SWB Dropside

Nissan revamped its Cabstar range of Dropsides, Tippers and Chassis Cabs in Spring 2004 and this included dropping the 'E' from the name.

Three wheelbases are on offer — short, medium and long — single or double cabs, there are two gross vehicle weights — 3.4 (swb) or 3.5 tonne — and there are two engine choices.

The old 2.7TD engine has been dropped in favour of a 3-litre which raises the power to 105 bhp with 155 lb/ft of peak torque and is found on swb derivatives. The other powerplant is basically the same unit but with an intercooler which ups the power to 125 bhp and the torque to 200 lb/ft It's used on mwb and lwb models. Service intervals for both are set at 12,500 miles.

The rear wheels are driven via a new five-speed transmission with a conventional 'H' shift pattern.

The front suspension is an all-new independent double wishbone arrangement with the rear remaining as a live axle. Anti-lock brakes are standard on the mwb and lwb.

The extra power is welcome and the gearchange is now slicker.

Inside the cab there's a new instrument panel and the steering wheel, seat trim and carpeting have been revised. A driver's airbag is fitted as standard.

Dropside and Tipper derivatives of all three wheelbases are available off the shelf and payloads for the former range from 1,492kg to 1,395kg.

Cabstar is covered by a three-year/60,000 mile warranty with six years anti-corrosion cover.
